Todd and Jean, Living the Dream (pt 2)

In part 1 of "Living the dream", I explained how I was motivated to purchase an Internet Business after reading Robert Kiyosaki's book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach... and consulting with a good friend, Rick Adams, author of Costly Online Blunders .  If you would like to review part 1, you can read it in last weeks issue 310 of the StreamsOfMoney Gazette.

In part 2, I will tell the story of how we acquired StreamsOfMoney. 

As explained in part 1 of the story, I was looking to purchase a true asset.  Something that would put money in my pocket on a regular basis.  I was considering a sandwich shop, rental houses and car washes.  Then, Rick Adams told me about an Internet Business that was for sale.

I compared Internet Business to the other opportunities I was considering and concluded that Internet Business is far less expensive to start, has much smaller monthly expenses and is less risky.  Like a rental property, the Internet Business will generate monthly income and has the potential to appreciate over time.  But, there is no worrying about a renter trashing my house or not paying the rent.

After carefully studying the sales letter for StreamsOfMoney and StreamsOfMoney itself, I decided it was time for Jean and I to make a trip to meet the founder and owner.  On June 13th, 2002, Jean and I caught a flight from Omaha to Chicago.  The next day, we met with the owner. 

He seemed like an honest guy.  He told us all about StreamsOfMoney and the revenue it was generating.  He even had us over to his house and allowed us to review bank statements and other proof of the businesses success.  My first question was exactly the same question that you are probably asking....  If StreamsOfMoney was profitable, why was he selling it?  There was one little reasons.  It weighed about 10 pounds and was darling.  He was a new dad and he wanted to dedicate his time to family.  Since he successfully started StreamsOfMoney and had helped many others start Internet Businesses, he knew he could successfully start a new Internet Business, when the time was right. 

As Jean and I traveled back to Omaha, we decided StreamsOfMoney was the right business for us.  But, there was so much to learn.  This was a functioning business that already had set procedures.  We didn't know much about affiliate programs, HTML, web hosting, etc.  How would we figure it all out?  We decided to present the owner with an offer that would compensate him in accordance with the performance of the business during our first 3 months of ownership.  He agreed to the deal.  In July, we took over as owners of StreamsOfMoney.  But, we weren't alone.  He was right there with us. 

We certainly made our share of mistakes during the first months of ownership, but I am OK with that.  I always say "if you don't want to make any mistakes, just don't do anything."  I prefer to do things, make mistakes and learn from them.  Looking back, I have to say that our successes have far outnumbered our failures.  Jean and I enjoy owning StreamsOfMoney and take great pride in our customer's successes.
